Summer – the Shaoyang Period
The Shaoyang period, the third Qi period of the year, spans from May 21st to the Great Heat on July 22nd. This timeframe symbolizes the zenith of Summer and marks the peak of Yang energy in the annual cycle. During the Shaoyang period, growth in nature and various life forms reaches its fullest expression, signifying a time when all aspects of life are ripe and flourishing. While heat remains a prominent feature, this period is not characterized by unending growth. Instead, it denotes the beginning of a transition into the latter half of the year, where the emphasis shifts toward the maturation of life and the preparations for the more introspective Autumn and Winter seasons.

Â
The Guest Qi, Jueyin, the Qi of Spring, and the climactic factor, Wind, correspond to the annual Five Period Qi. This correlation indicates that windy conditions are expected to be frequent. In the context of the Five Element system, Wood produces Fire, thereby creating a beneficial relationship between the Host and Guest Qi. However, it is essential to recognize that in nature, Wind can intensify Fire, potentially leading to adverse outcomes. As a result, this Summer it could be windier than usual and hotter than normal due to the interplay between Wind and Fire elements.
Â
During this Qi period, it is essential to continue balancing and harmonizing the Wood element, alongside the Fire element. This balancing act calls for cool, calming movements to prevent overheating, both physically and emotionally. Overheating can manifest in various emotional states such as anger, irritability, frustration, and anxiety. It is important to approach these emotions mindfully, recognizing their potential. When channeled effectively, these feelings can serve as catalysts for creativity, leading to innovative ideas and productive outcomes. Therefore, maintaining emotional equilibrium during this period is crucial for fostering creativity and well-being.

Dietary Choices
Incorporating soothing and cooling herbs and foods can significantly benefit both mental and physical well-being throughout the warmer months. Here are some recommended options that may help in alleviating stress and calming frayed nerves:
Â
·      Broccoli, celery, chrysanthemum tea, cucumber, lemon water, lettuce (all types), peppermint tea, watermelon, zucchini
Â
·      Additionally, consuming light meals and ensuring proper hydration can further help soothe tense nerves and temperamental moods.
Â
These dietary choices contribute to overall well-being by managing stress levels and promoting a sense of calm.

The last time we had this Qi combination was in the third Qi period for 2019. It can be helpful to reflect on that time and learn about the events that may have occurred, or how life was during that period. How was your health? If you are a practitioner of any kind, you may remember a theme of conditions that were prevalent in your practice at that time.
