The Wu Yun (Five Periods) and Liu Qi (Six Qi) theories, found in chapters 66-71 and chapter 74 of the Huangdi Nei Jing, are integral to the expression of all living beings. Originating in the Northern Hemisphere, all observations were recorded by the ancient sages and is based on the natural progression of the seasons. Starting with the Lunar New Year in late January or early February, and continuing through the 12th Lunar month, which ends in January of the following year.
So, what about the southern hemisphere?
As we know, the Southern Hemisphere experiences the same seasons and the shifting of the sun and moon's trajectory in the sky – it’s just opposite. From my studies and consultations with others, it is clear that the expression of Qi occurs six months later in the Southern Hemisphere than in the Northern Hemisphere. The equivalent climatic period for the start of the Lunar New Year is late July to early August. By establishing this as a plausible seasonal adjustment, we can align the entire theory with the seasonal expression in the Southern Hemisphere.
This detailed and informative PDF describes the manifestation of the Yun Qi (Five Period Qi), the Celestial Stem, the Earthly Branch, and the Liu Qi (Six Qi) according to the seasons, as well as the corresponding Guest Qi for each. Complete with a monthly calendar spanning from the Great Cold in July, 2025 to the Great Cold in July 2026, that includes the 24 Solar Terms, moon phases, eclipses and planetary movements.
Additionally, the sexagenary (60-year) calendar, spanning 120 years, is included as a reference. This calendar includes the Celestial Stem and its element, the corresponding Yun Qi (Five Period Qi), the Earthly Branch and its element, and the corresponding Liu Qi (Six Qi) for each year.
